Hello All,

I would appreciate if anyone could provide links for WebP images with Exif metadata.
Sure I could create my own using WriteWebPWithMetadata but I would like to test files created by someone else.

Thanks in advance,
Marcelo

you can simply use Imagemagick's "convert" tool [1]: 'convert in.jpg out.webp'
If the source jpg contains EXIF data, they'll be copied in out.webp.

hope it helps,

Thanks in advance,
Marcelo

Later GIMP version also exports the exif if you save to WebP and the original had one

I just tried this with IM 7.1 and metadata was not written to the webp file. Not for exif or iptc. At least not by default.

Using an image with icc, exif and xmp, ImageMagick 6.9.11-60 Q16 and a local build of ImageMagick 7.1.1-12 (Beta) Q16-HDRI, both copy icc and exif. 7.1.1-12 copies XMP as well. WebP doesn't define a well-known chunk for iptc (maybe we should). Do you have an example file you can share?

Thanks for verifying James. It turned out to be a problem with how Homebrew compiles ImageMagick (webpmux is missing)
When I used cwebp to convert the image, the EXIF and XMP metadata was preserved, but IPTC was not.

I understand that IPTC isn't used so much any more, but I see no good reason to exclude it from this encoding tool. There are a lot of images out there with IPTC metadata, and IPTC is a worldwide press standard. Google image search still displays IPTC metadata for image results, because it contains important copyright and licensing info.
Adobe Lightroom exports IPTC metadata.
Some cameras automatically add creator IPTC metadata to photos. (eg. Canon EOS R7, Sony ILCE, etc.)

Thanks for the feedback. I think the general preference is to embed this in an XMP chunk now, but for legacy cases we have two options: 1) create a new chunk for WebP to hold the information as is or 2) add or modify an XMP chunk to contain the data.
(1) has compatibility issues, while (2) has the potential for duplicate information or if we simply add an extra XMP chunk, reader compatibility issues.

I filed https://crbug.com/webp/617 to track this.

Hey Marcelo,

I think I might have a very good solution for your "WebP images with EXIF data" source problem: there is a worldwide known messaging app called WhatsApp which uses the WebP format for their Stickers (~high quality emojis), both static and animated. All stickers have EXIF data, which is kind of a signature, providing the file with some information that can be seen in the Sticker details in Whatsapp like sticker publisher name, sticker packet name, sticker ID, link to the app used to create the sticker in Google store (Android), link to the app used to create the sticker in iTunes store (iOS).

I became interested in the subject since I enjoy making customized stickers, specially the high definition animated without background ones, as they make for way better addition to a group chat than emojis or GIFs ever could, although they are quite tricky to make but I am specializing. Anyway, it can be a great source of WebP files with EXIF metadata, and what you need to do is download/install the app (WhatsApp) which is free, if you don't already have it, and use your phone file browser to access the files at "<Internal Storage>\Android\media\com.whatsapp\WhatsApp\Media\WhatsApp Stickers" for Android, which is the one I have, no idea what would be the iOS path though.

Attached are one example of a custom static sticker (with EXIF data) and a snapshot of how this data is displayed inside the messaging app (text on the left in bold is the sticker packet name, to the right is the sticker publisher name, and the "View more" link takes you to the app used to create that sticker in the store).

Well, that's it. Kind regards,

Eduardo Spuqui
