This newbie wants to lean the art of video encoding but is stuck when he looks a the libav documentation. Please could you help give me a big kick start by posting links to articals that explan the subject. I am only interested in free video formats. Thank you very much!

What are you trying to understand? How to use software libraries at a
high level to perform video encoding? Or how to actually implement video
encoders, and the algorithms and math that go into them?

What are you trying to understand? How to use software libraries at a high level to perform video encoding? Or how to actually implement video encoders, and the algorithms and math that go into them?

What things like quantizer and "Constant of ratecontrol equation.", etc means. What the avconv video compression options mean? How to work out the best/most affective options are to achieve a goal. From as good looking video as posable under a streaming bandwidth limit too the best quarlity, space no object without doing a dum high cbr. What to do differentially for different types of work (animation -simple bold colours,high detail, anime(jap style),west style,computer like Big Buck Bunny-, conf talks, action, wild/nature/views, city, stage, interview, news report, day to day, car/travel, slow with the odd sudden quick movement, close up, slowmo, etc) So I guess option 2: "How to use software libraries at a
high level to perform video encoding?"?

Yes...uh umm I noticed that after... posting. I need learn :P to look closer before I post.

Alexander,

I recommend reviewing the following page, which really has a good
summary of video codec topics, appropriately enough:

There are plenty of related topics linked from that article that are
also good reading.

Aside from that, for more interactive learning, I recommend you hop on
the FreeNode IRC server (https://freenode.net/, but webchat is currently
down) and visit some channels, such as #vp8 related to this channel, and
#theora and #xiph for similar topics related to free/open-source
multimedia codec discussion. I can vouch for the welcoming environment
in these communities, as long as you are, likewise, friendly and
well-mannered. :)

As to the specific topics you asked about at the top, if they were
easily solvable problems with universal solutions, it'd be easy enough
to point you to them, but they're not. Experience is the best teacher
when it comes to tuning.
