10-12 bit depth for archiving and development would truly make this format competitive for developers and designers, allow for full integration into development workflows, and overall promote broad adoption of the format. Such could be accomplished by using the VP9 codec, or extending VP8, in the same way that it is used in WEBM. Currently, FLIF and JPEG XR cover this niche. Please forgive if feature requests use are improper use of the reporting system.

The webp format is closed for bitstream changes given how widely it's currently deployed. This feature is definitely worth considering in future formats, however. Thanks for the request.
