Hi,
from tests performed on 1000's of crawled images, it appears that:
* FLIF compresses 4-7% better, depending on content class.
* FLIF encoding is 3-5x slower
* FLIF decoding is ~20x slower
This matches the results reported here:
http://cloudinary.com/blog/flif_the_new_lossless_image_format_that_outperforms_png_webp_and_bpg
Some takeaway: libwebp HEAD repo already has some improvements that will be part of 0.5.0 release (for grayscale content, e.g., where FLIF performs much better). The 0.4.4 release was for fixes, so didn't include these improvements.
