I've decided to part ways with my first road bike.  Bought in 1984 at Racer Sportif in Toronto, this 2x6 steel gem hasn't seen the road in a couple of decades.

It needs some work, plus probably new tires, tubes and brake pads.

$150 OBO

Yes Matt !!!

NOoooo Steve.

For those of you with a bit of history with the Club, you will know that we did a vintage bikes revival several years ago.  I rebuilt my 1982 Peugeot SPRINT....my first ever road bike.  I catalogued the whole build on the old WCC website forum...but that seems to be completely erased from history...so no references for you.

Anyway...a handful of us built our vintage bikes and raced (rode) the Torus Mors Vintage bike ride up in Creemore.  https://www.creemorespringsturasmor.com

The requirements for the bike were...pre-1984 bike or earlier, downtube shifters....and you had to wear your earliest jersey. This is Steve and I at the Start. He's wearing his vintage WCC jersey and I've got my vintage Brooklyn jersey....bit tight fitting 30 years later.
Alain and Steve at Turos Mor.jpg

I still have my vintage bike.  In fact, I put a milk crate on the back and I used it now to get groceries every week during COVID !!!!

I took this picture a few minutes ago, just to post it here...
IMG_0535.JPG

Note:  I did break from the "purist" rebuild rules and added some green and red accent pieces to show-off my proud WCC heritage.

Whether Matt adopts it, or Steve keeps it.  It's these early frames and rides that built us into the people we are 40 years later.

Cherish them.

Alain

Uuugh!!!!
Y'all are pulling my heart in all the directions!
My first road bike is also a vintage Bianchi which I'm currently in the process of restoring to it's original parts with intention to sell...but now... Any plans on reviving the vintage bike rides?

Anyway, someone buy that sweet sweet bike! Before Steve changes his mind.

That's a great pic Alain, thanks for sharing!  It's time to thin the herd a bit.  I'm an advocate of "you can never have too many bikes", but this one (and the Cannondale Saeco I sold last week) just weren't getting used anymore.  So I'm glad to move them on.

Matt, I'm 5'10" and my other road bikes have been 55-56cm  So I imagine this one is around that size too.

Yes, Matt.  Do it !   I don't want to hijack Steve post !  Sorry.

In particular...do you know how hard it was for me to find those brake levers on Steve's bike?  I would buy that bike, just for the levers!  Well maybe those SAKAE cranks too.  #CLASSIC

Alain

P.S.  Yes, Gwyn.  We should.   You, me and Matt !    No pressure now, eh Matt !

Poop. Not my size. I am short AND have a terribly short inseam.

Plus, I'd probably do it disservice.

Cheers guys. Here's to group rides before the end of 2020.

I am in for vintage rides.
Just last week I picked up a new to me 1986 Rossi. Although I’m not the original owner, I did buy a Rossi from the same shop (Scattolon) in Hamilton in the mid 80’s.
Its in amazing condition and I’m looking forward to putting some sparkle on it.
I have been thinking of seeing if there is more interest in the group. Did Turas More last year and loved it.

Thanks for the spirit everyone!  It does break my heart a little but I’ve found a buyer from Burlington. He rebuilds old classics and just finished another rebuild and is excited to start a new project!

Dangit. You guys are almost making me want to revive Chrissy Redden's UCI Worlds 1989 Ritchey cross bike I rode and retired after Glen (aka Back 40 Bicycleworks) built me the one I've been riding since 2014 modelled on the very same Ritchey geometry. Cornered like a Ninja (what the heck does that mean??) Loved the bike, hated the brakes and well, yeah, carbon does make a difference and N=2.

OMG....I was just writing an email about you Tabi to this group....about BT700 !!!

Plus....I took THAT picture of you that you attached above !!!!   #Royalties

Alright...let's circle this all up.

1) There was no doubt that your bike would go fast, Steve.  Congrats.

2) Hopefully Steve, you are using the new found funds to buy a special pannier or ultra light tent or bike packing stove?  Do tell?  For those of you new to WCC (and there are like ~500 of us on this email list)...Steve "started" gravel rides at WCC (circa 2012) and has won the coveted Ride Leader Award...along with Bill, Igor, Kevin and bunch of others who took to the gravel roads year round in search of adventure.  Gravel created a different type of ridership at WCC.  It brought MTB and Road together.  And created the KWCX group (thanks to Mike O & Adam P.).  So MUCH history.

3) Matt K. and Tabi (above) are legends on the club.  Matt writes for Cycling Canada Magazine and Tabi is well.....I dare say.....the Matriarch of the Club.  Sorry Tabi....but you've been here for a couple of decades....and we are the same age....and you've beaten me so many times on that CX bike...that I don't care anymore how old we are. ;)

Anyway.  Matt and Tabi travel the world on their bikes.  They are the creators of the BT700.  http://www.bt700.ca.    I think this will be the ONLY race/ride that officially comes off this year....as there is a GRAND DEPART in St. Jacobs on July 12 ?....but it's pretty much solo and most of us will just ride it on our own time.

4) And our very own, Taryn Davis, has just launched the WCC BikePacking Group (chime in, if you'd like Taryn) now that Steve has sold his bike...this thread is FULLY hijacked.  Must be COVID and our desire to ride and share ride stories together and the lack of a public forum....but I digress.

Be good.  And Ride well everyone.

Haha! Just when my husband had persuaded me to get ride of my 80s road bike! Nope, don’t think I can do it now. Although it’s not a Bianchi - which I pined for - it is still nostalgic, and where riding began for me before a 25-year interruption. And, in fact, if was a 20km ride around Ayr on my birthday six years ago that reminded how much I loved riding a bike.

The rest… and my bank account… is history!

Susan
p.s. It was a Raleigh Super Grand Prix and my biggest regret is that I let the shop keep the leather saddle when I bought a new one for it for a try-a-tri. :(

1) Alain: You must be getting old 'cuz Matt took the photo. I can tell by the wonky lens distortion. But perhaps you were standing beside him heckling....And we're not the same age. I'm older. Yay.

2) Yes a huge thank you to Steve and all those who started the gravel rides! I haven't ridden a road bike since 2014 and tossed away the road wheels I used on the cross bike in 2016. Much happier and done SO MUCH MORE EXPLORING right from the front door.

3) Matt is working his butt off to figure out a way to have a Grand Depart for the 2nd annual BT700 on July 12 in a manner appropriate for these times, but we're pretty confident it can be done as restrictions are loosening daily. He's also been contacting various food/accommodation options detailed in the POI GPS files for changes in open status. www.bt700.ca for details/updates or that Facebook thing.
But a reminder that the BT700 is a bikepacking route open to anyone at anytime to do entirely at their own discretion while keeping it appropriate to the times.

4) And...not only did Taryn launch the bikepacking forum....she also rode 200km TODAY. SOLO. ON GRAVEL. wow! That gal is goin' places!

Ride on!

Now i feel guilty for updating my 1987 Conago 'Sport', likely the lowest of Colnagos going, but it has served me well. I finally updated it to 10 speed rear wheel with handle bar shifters when i moved to a PowerTap.

Now that i have updated to a carbon.....maybe i need to do some restoring.

Also really thinking of the BT700, or part of it, might be a little slow with the Mountian Bike, but looks like fun.

Thanks to all those who have worked so hard to make this club what it is.

Shout out for Gravel! My favourite part of WCC. So civilized. I'm not bailing on road though. Need to have options in life.
TurasMur would have been last weekend. Amazing weather. Who would have thought we could get dusty. 1st year was snowing sideways.
Alain, send the pictures of the chicutery rest stop.
When this is over we can do a vintage bike run to commemorate. My Peugeot has been relegated to the cottage trainer and is chopming  at the bit to get some (a few) miles in.
Ride but ride safe everyone

Alright....well...you asked for it.  And I still owe you a case of beer, James.

You see...you get a free case of beer from Creemore at the end of the ride.  I "took" James' entry ticket because he couldn't make it.  I brought his beer back to my house.  But....but....I just couldn't resist....it was gone within a week.  #IOU

But, here are the pictures that I uploaded to the WCC Flickr site, when we used to do such things.  Half of these are mine...probably the other half are Bill Friers.

I love how this post has evolved.  From an initial  post about a bike for sale, to classic bikes, to how old we are!

With regards to the gravel thread, I'm in the process of writing about some of my favourite gravel roads in the area (on my blog).  I've also got a library of photos from the "early" days of gravel riding (most were taken by Alain!)

I've attached one from April 2016, and I know I took it because if you look closely you can see Alain up near the front of the pack.  Thiago, Ana Maria, Taryn, .Tom, Chris Y were also on this sunset ride!

The second photo is one of the early Gravel ride (prior to becoming official WCC rides!)  Martin, Jason (I think?), myself on Gaelen's previous CX bike, Kristian, Igor, Oliver, Todd and Gary.  Alain must have taken this one!

And look at the third photo - remember when we had groups of over 25?  I think the record was into the 30s.  Lots of familiar faces (photo by Alain).

Thx for sharing Steve. I am in that 2nd pic in white. One of the few I did.
I remember another one with you, your Bro,  Alain, Moe. My Wife took a pic by the time we got home of the 3 of us. We were covered in mud. Good times and memories.
