I am posting this at the request of Kathryn Broadbelt, the Active Transportation Program Coordinator for the City of Waterloo.

----------

The City of Waterloo is conducting a survey to gather information on the public’s opinions in regard to bicycle parking:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/T9ZQYRV

I am looking to gain a better understanding of what types of bicycle infrastructure citizens of Waterloo want to see, as well as where they would like to see more of it.  The survey will remain open until Friday, November 30.

Thanks,

Kathryn

I went to answer this survey, and then realized that I actually have nothing to contribute! I hadn’t thought about it until now, but I don’t park my bike anywhere except at home.

I wonder if the city of waterloo needs to conduct a survey before making car parking spaces.

I have a similar view Craig, but I thought I would give it a look as that's not to say I have never or would never use bicycle parking! Hopefully something positive comes out of this survey!?

Thanks!
I also don't leave any of my "babies" anywhere, but I do have a beater that I ride around town. I have pretty strong opinions about bicycle parking!!!!

I will check out the survey.  But as a general rule, you should be able to lock your bike in the absolute most convenient place possible.  It's a very small "thank you" for reducing congestion on roads, producing zero emissions, and posing no threat to peoples lives/safety.

A related side story:

My wife used to ride the beater of all beaters. It had more rust than paint, pedal axels were bent, and the BB sounded like a rock crusher. She never locked it anywhere, figuring that no one would want to steal it, and if they did it’d be no great loss.

One day she leaned it up against a light pole, and went into a store. She came out to find her bike missing and thought, “Ah, it was finally stolen”. But after having ridden it, the thief must have decided it wasn’t worth their time, since she found it leaned up against another light pole, a few poles down the road!
