From Afghanistan to the U.S.: Stories of Displacement and New Futures
From Afghanistan to the US: Stories of Displacement and New Futures Virginia Tech's Center for Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement Studies is pleased to host an evening with stories of displacement and the pursuit of new futures. First, members of the Afghan Army's Female Tactical Platoon will tell of their escape from Kabul after the return of the Taliban, their journey to the US, and (with members of the VT community) their participation with the CRMDS Afghan Conversation Project. Second, we will hear from Samman Akbarzada, an Afghan refugee and the author of two books. A student at the University of Virginia, Samman's commitments include working with NGOs and advocating for the rights of displaced and underserved communities. Home Beyond Home: Submit Your Photos to Our Community Exhibit and Contest
Cranwell International Center is hosting the 3rd annual Home Beyond Home: An International Student Photography Exhibit. Send us your photos based on what the phrase “home beyond home” means to you. It can be an image of what makes you smile or gives you solace, a literal building/location/place, a moment in time, a person or group of people, symbol of how you belong. What is your “home beyond home” as an international student? Cranwell is partnering with visual artist Michael Borowski and Laura Iancu to help Cranwell select, curate, and judge first, second, third place, and honorable mention winners! Prizes are various amounts of dining dollars. We will also select and curate a certain number of images to be displayed in the larger Home Beyond Home exhibit. Rule: This must be a photograph taken by YOU. The rights of this image cannot belong to someone else.
The exhibit will be shown in the Blacksburg YMCA Community Gallery Space from April 17- May 1. The opening reception will be April 17, where we will announce the winners!
Submissions open until March 31st.
