Hello students,

I am thinking of each of you and the many things you carry as international students. There are lots of opportunities, challenges, and expectations that come with those intersecting roles.

With all that is going on in the world, we have received many questions where the answers extend beyond Cranwell International Center into the work of other colleagues on campus. Many of these questions have centered around basic needs or financial concerns tied to immigration uncertainty, including summer unemployment. You will find a Frequently Asked Questions document attached that goes over the best answers so that in this busy time of year you are not having to go to multiple offices to understand what is possible and what resources exist. We are thankful for the Dean of Students, Hokie Wellness, the Graduate School, the Graduate Ombuds, Career & Professional Development, The Market at Virginia Tech, and Cook Counseling for working with us to try to streamline the answers in a way we could share them.

Not every situation fits neatly into a category. The guide should feel helpful in identifying a place to start:

·    Financial/basic needs concerns → Dean of Students, Market at VT, Hokie Wellness (financial literacy education)

·    Work authorization/employment questions → Cranwell International Center, Career & Professional Development, Graduate School (for Graduate Coop)

·    Mental health/stress → Cook Counseling, TimelyCare

·    Specific visa/compliance issues → Cranwell International Center

·    Academic/degree progress questions → Graduate School or Academic Advising Teams

We know this document cannot solve the structural problems many of you are facing. We also know that some of you are in situations that do not fit neatly into any of these categories. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the campus office you think best fits, and we will do our best to assist you in navigating this moment.

Warmly,

Lauren Oliver
