Clarification of data to input in the online system when measuring to a fixed finish line.
- When the measurement of your course is between a start line and a finish line that you know will need to be adjusted later to bring the course to the correct distance, or an estimated turn-around will be adjusted to do this (as opposed to continuing your ride until the counter hits the 5k mark), the online system generates a measurement table that is labeled in a confusing way.

- It labels the last line of the table “5k” for example, rather than labeling it “Finish.” In the box on the “5k” line you should enter your count at the finish line, rather than what the count would be for 5k. Then the system will calculate for you how much you need to add or subtract to bring the course to the correct distance. You will then adjust your start or finish or turn-around, by that amount.

Lane-restricted turns on maps.
- It’s important to include the exact path followed for lane-restricted turns, for example when runners are restricted to right lanes and make a left turn.
- From the Procedures Manual here are some possibilities for describing the path followed for this type of turn.

- For the image above labeled “SIMPLEST” it is not necessary to show the path. For the other situations you must describe or show the path followed.
- Images of common situations are shown in the Map Clipart file (see Mapping Tools below) which can be used to describe the turns.
Komoot mapping website: https://www.komoot.com/
- Thanks to Pennsylvania measurer Tom Lechleitner for finding this great tool.
- After opening the Komoot website, import GPX file of your course route.
- The website creates a nice blue line (which has good contrast for black & white printing) of the route with direction arrows!
- No advertisements on map (unlike google maps).
- Screenshot the map/route and paste to your favorite drawing program.
- Provides a good start to a certification map. Of course many details would still need to be added.
Map clipart- A library of small images that can be copied and pasted to your certification map is available at https://rrtc.net/Clipart/Clipart.html
- These could be used as a starting point for detailed descriptions of your start/finish/turn-arounds, as well as other details on the course.
- The clipart is available in two versions:
- PDF file (use a MacOS Screenshot tool
or Windows Snipping Tool
to copy and paste). - LibreOffice/OpenOffice Presentation file, where the individual images are editable drawing objects.
- If you have ideas for other map components that could be included, let us know.
