REMINDER: Attendee Registration is Still Open!

 

The Spring NEARC Conference on May 21st is quickly approaching! Register to attend this affordable and action-packed one day conference today! Scholarship applications for students and professions are still available and will be awarded on a rolling basis until May 8, or until the scholarship funds run out!

Scholarship Applications:

NEARC is excited to continue to offer scholarships for both student and professional attendees. Scholarship applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until May 8th at 11:59 PM, and decisions will be returned by May 10.

 

If you’re unsure if you should apply, please go for it! We want to support members of the NEARC community with scholarships to cover the cost of registration (travel/lodging costs are not covered), particularly students, young professionals, and those who do not receive employer assistance! Far From The Tree is a hard cidery in Salem MA near Salem State University campus. They are a local institution serving craft cider in a cozy tasting room with outdoor patio. They are bring your own food and there is nearby pizza and roast beef (a North Shore classic). Bingo starts at 7 so we will be there from 5 – 6:30PM.

Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Dr Marcos Luna

 

GIS as a force for good: Reflections on how geospatial professionals can make the world a better place

 

Dr. Marcos Luna is a Professor of Geography and Sustainability and Coordinator of the graduate Geo-Information Science program at Salem State University. His research focuses on environmental justice and applications of geospatial analytic techniques to social and environmental inequities. He has published research on the inequity of natural gas leaks, urban noise, transit efficiency and equity, energy, air pollution, and environmental policy. He works with community organizations and policy makers on environmental justice, housing and segregation, transportation equity, and climate change adaptation. He is an appointed member of a committee on environmental justice mapping for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He is a governor-appointed member of the Massachusetts Environmental Justice Council. He serves on the Board of Directors for GreenRoots, an environmental justice organization serving Chelsea and East Boston in Massachusetts, as well as the Board of Directors for Comunidades Enraizadas Community Land Trust in Chelsea. Finally, he serves on the Education Committee for the Boston Public Library Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center.
