Hi all,

In the aftermath of the big snow storm, I had some interesting questions posed to me.

  1. Does anyone know of a comprehensive listing (map) of medical facilities in RI? I remember seeing a list of Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs) related to a broadband access initiative that would probably have a lot of overlap.  Not sure if there’s a resource where a list like that would be available and/or regularly updated.
  2. Is anyone aware of a map showing prioritized routes / roads around hospitals (or perhaps other CAIs) such that if the route was blocked, access to the hospital would be difficult.  I assume this is just handled on the local DPW level, but interested if there’s any kind of statewide effort to document this.

Sincerely,

Dan Herstine

RIGIS has a Hospital layer that was updated in 2025.  https://www.rigis.org/datasets/f0523588ed664d6ab9e88b01ae70f21f_4/

Hi Daniel,

RIEMA does maintain a comprehensive list of medical facilities in Rhode Island, including hospitals, urgent care centers, blood donation centers, and other related facilities. Currently, this list is incorporated into our Lifelines framework and is intended for internal RIEMA use only; it is not publicly available at this time.

Regarding your second question, the answer is more complex. Access routes and prioritization can vary significantly depending on the type of climate hazard involved (e.g., flooding, snowstorms, etc.), and impacts may differ substantially from one event to another. Coordination around road prioritization is often handled at the local DPW level, though this is certainly an important topic.

I agree that this would be a valuable subject for further discussion at an upcoming RIGIS meeting.

Best,

Caterina

Hello Daniel,

You could use the RIDOH licensing database as source material to create GIS data for mapping. Some of the records pertain to individuals (doctors and nurses who have to register for a license), while others pertain to facilities (hospitals, emergency care centers). It would take some work to sift through and process, and you would need to geocode the addresses. It also omits facilities that fall outside the state's purview (VA hospital for example).

The database:
