transliteration, Arabic to Latin characters

Dear Sir/Madame:

I am working on an English text for a book that requires the occasional transliteration from Arabic (Egyptian) to Latin characters.

I wonder if there are software products that  do that. Do you have such a product for sale? Where do I get information about it? Do you know of other products?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Our open-source ICU project has transliteration functions, and rules for
many scripts. If you need different rules from what we have, or if you
need to make modifications, then you can supply your own rules to the ICU
functions. If you do have better rules, please let us know :-)

For occasional use, you can try the online demo for this functionality:

This also has links with an overview etc.
(Try selecting "Arabic" for Source1 and "Latin" for Target1, then type or
paste some Arabic text into the Input field.)

It appears that our rules are primarily based on the UNGEGN rules, see

ICU itself is a set of C/C++ and Java libraries for developers. We do have
sample applications, but like the transliterator demo that I provided you
the URL for, most of them are designed for online usage, which requires a
web server to run them.

It would be easy for someone familiar with Java to adapt sample code and
provide a simple standalone application for Arabic-Latin transliteration.
We have sample code, a User Guide and API references on our web site.

I would like to suggest that you try the online demo first to see if it
suits your purposes.

If LOC rules need to be used, then someone would have to express them in a
certain syntax and supply them to our library - or to the online demo - in
text form.

ICU works entirely on Unicode text, as modern browsers and operating
systems do. If you copy/paste between different windows, the Unicode text
will be transferred between them. For any font-related problems see

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I use the Library of Congress romanization scheme, which I am sure you
have.
If not, I would be very happy to find you the URL.
Is your software available only on-line? Can it be downloaded somewhere? I
have not tried to copy and paste from the on-line interface to any local
document. What fonts will result? Can we alter the fonts?
