I just noticed that ICU 2.6 replaces the previous 943_P14A table with one with a lower year in its name, but which has later dates internally, and differs only by now agreeing with Microsoft on the 5 or 6 codepage characters that previously mapped to different Unicode codepoints.

It sounds like problems with these characters in Unicode software against Japanese codepage databases have been surfacing across the industry. We've seen them at Siebel, and Oracle has also seen problems and introduced the JA16SJISTILDE charset in Oracle 9.2 which makes their one problem 2U:1C character Wave Dash conform to Microsoft.

I'd like to find any available information about the change in 943_P14A. We'd be particularly interested in plans for DB2 to offer this charset.

Maybe my previous comment on this mapping table will help you.

Great, thanks, that helps explain it. Now I only need to find out when DB2 starts using the new table.

Can I subscribe to the list in order to get these updates? Some info about this list says it is for ICU internal use and you should not subscribe to it, though http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/oss/mailman/listinfo/icu-charsets does not say this.

Joseph, you would not get all that much out of subscribing to the
icu-charsets list because we use it only as a distributor for several team
members to field questions. As the mailing list page
(http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/archives/) says: "This is not meant as a
discussion forum but only as a forwarding point for ICU team members who
respond to questions." You are welcome to search the archives, though, or
Google-search the entire server, if you are looking for something.

Especially, there are no general announcements about changes of IBM
conversion tables or DB2's use of them on this "list", and a lot of
charset questions arrive on the other mailing lists, too.

Let me check and update the per-list administrative pages. We almost never
look at those...

Best regards,
markus
