Hi CLDR folks,

A Qt bug-reporter has brought to my attention [0] that the Royal Spanish
Academy of Language says [1] that a thin space should be used as
digit-grouping separator, not the dot currently given in CLDR v45's
es.xml - I can't actually read Spanish, but I've no reason to mistrust
the reporter's translation of it.

[1] https://www.rae.es/ortograf%C3%ADa/los-n%C3%BAmeros-enteros-y-el-separador-de-millares

How, if at all, does that bear on CLDR's criteria for what to use for es_ES ?

Eddy.

Thanks, Edward.
We’re late in the v46 cycle. You could compare with https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/tree/main/common/main  and then perhaps file a bug.  Or encourage the reporters to participate in CLDR data entry?

I already did the latter, as you will find on

By the way, this thin space is the one and only allowed digit grouping
separator in SI.
https://www.bipm.org/en/publications/si-brochure/
clause 5.4.4: Following the 9th CGPM (1948, Resolution 7) and the 22nd CGPM
(2003, Resolution 10),
for numbers with many digits the digits may be divided into groups of three
by a space, in
order to facilitate reading. Neither dots nor commas are inserted in the
spaces between
groups of three. However, when there are only four digits before or after
the decimal
marker, it is customary not to use a space to isolate a single digit.

CLDR is designed to follow customary, common use in the country/ies in question. This is sometimes different than what is recognized as official; it depends on how widespread that official practice is followed in practice.

I (Monday, 12 August 2024 21:17) asked:

The reporter has since told me this has already been reported:
https://unicode-org.atlassian.net/browse/CLDR-15508

Thank you. That will help me explain such discrepancies to those who
use CLDR data via QLocale in future ;^>
