The Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship (IDF) provides a unique opportunity for outstanding doctoral students whose research is interdisciplinary and who would benefit from interaction with faculty at one of the University’s interdisciplinary research centers or institutes.  Applicants designate the host center or institute they believe is the best match with their research topic, contingent upon endorsement by the host center or institute.

The award includes a stipend of $23,000 for the academic year (September-May), tuition for up to 14 graduate credits each semester (fall & spring), and subsidized health insurance through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan.  Summer health insurance will be provided if the Fellow remains eligible.

Some research centers and institutes have an initial review deadline. Prospective applicants must check with centers and institutes well in advance of this deadline to ensure a good match and to determine whether there are specific application materials the center or institute requires. Centers and institutes are encouraged to pre-screen applicants and only support those who are a good fit.

Selection Criteria
The review will be conducted by a University-wide faculty committee.  Selection of recipients will be based on the following criteria:
-the interdisciplinary nature of the research project
-the innovativeness of the proposed research
-how affiliation with the host center/institute will benefit the student
-the willingness and ability of the center/institute and its faculty to host the student during the fellowship year
-the student's independence, originality, and the comparative strength of the academic record
-the potential contribution of the research to the field
-the strength of the supporting letters

For more information, eligibility requirements, and application instructions please visit: http://www.grad.umn.edu/projects-priorities-interdisciplinary-initiatives-funding-opportunities/idf-16-17

Please submit an electronic copy of the required documentation to Rachel Goeller at deco...@umn.edu by noon on Monday, October 12th, 2015. Please note that the letter of endorsement from the host center or institute maybe submitted after the other application materials are due if necessary. Please check in with Rachel if your research center or institute has a significantly different deadline.

Thank You!
