A faculty member is going to validate a test for an external company and is characterizing the activity as research.  Test validation is something that many lab managers do as part of the core mission of our ESO.  The majority of the testing will be done in an ISO, the validation will happen outside the ESO. 
What criteria would we use to judge whether this is a research or external sales activity?

This does not specifically answer that question, but since I utilize it on occasion I wanted to make sure that people knew that classif...@umn.edu will help to determine if something is a gift, a grant, or an external sale.

i routed this thru classification.  it is external sales.  there may be research in one of the test comparisons that we do but I will route that to classification when I see something come thru.
