We have a faculty member with an R21, and his Co-I has since left the University (named as key personnel on the NOA). The Co-I is still going to be involved at the same level in the R21 as originally proposed, but will not have any paid effort in Year 2 (Year 1 was already paid prior to his departure). Is an effort reduction letter required? His new institution is covering 100% of his salary, so no subaward would be set up for his involvement.

I should also add that he is maintaining an unpaid adjunct faculty position here at UMN.

Hi Suzanne,

Since the Co-I is key personnel and there is a change to that relationship and effort plan you should definitely notify the sponsor.  Please work with your SPA GA to coordinate the letter that they will send to the sponsor on the PI's behalf.

Thanks,
 Nicole
