First Talk:
TitleAn integral representation and constructive interference of electromagnetic fields.

AbstractElectromagnetic waves are central to many technologies, from wireless communication to medical devices. In this talk, I will discuss mathematical tools for understanding and controlling electromagnetic fields and how these ideas lead to applications in antenna design and biomedical engineering.

Speaker Bio: Kalpesh Jaykar is a Ph.D. candidate in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota, advised by Professor Richard D. James. His research focuses on electromagnetic wave propagation, antenna array design, and mathematical methods for solving Maxwell’s equations. His work includes developing integral representations of time-harmonic electromagnetic fields, applying group-theoretic methods to phased antenna arrays and deployable origami structures, and designing miniature magnetoelectric antenna arrays for biomedical implants and brain–computer interface technologies. Prior to his doctoral studies, he received his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India, where he worked on biomimetic autonomous underwater vehicles, and his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai, India, where he studied morphing-wing mechanisms for unmanned aerial vehicles.

Second Talk:
TitleACS3 Attitude Determination and Analysis

AbstractThe NASA ACS3 mission launched in 2024 and deployed the solar sail approximately 4 months later on August 28, 2024. Unexpected challenges during sail deployment resulted in high rotation rates that significantly reduced the power and communication availability. This talk presents work done at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center attempting to reconstruct the attitude of the solar sail in the time following deployment in order to allow accurate measurement of the solar radiation pressure induced thrust and moments.

Speaker BioLogan Anderson is a 5th year PhD candidate in the ARDC Lab and NSTGRO fellowship recipient. He will be joining the Control Systems Design & Analysis Branch at NASA Marshall as a civil servant in November. His work is focused on system identification and control design for flexible aerospace systems. Outside of work, Logan can usually be found biking or climbing rocks and ice depending on the time of year.
