Subject: Statistician position with the DC government
To: stat...@math.umd.edu <stat...@math.umd.edu>

Good morning,

I hope you are doing well.

I'm writing to share an open position that could be a great fit for graduating doctoral students or alumni of the statistics department. This position is ideal for an individual interested in and somewhat experienced with the criminal and juvenile justice systems. This is also a great position for someone interested in a career in local or federal government: many of our staff leave CJCC for more advanced positions in the federal government with DOJ and HHS.

A short blurb and link to apply are below.

The team at DC's Criminal Justice Coordinating Council is hiring a Statistician.

CJCC works to improve public safety and the fair administration justice for DC residents, visitors, and people involved in the justice system. We collaborate with over a dozen different District and federal agencies to conduct data analysis, research, training, and technical assistance centering around four issue areas: violence, juvenile justice, substance use and mental health, and corrections.

The Statistician position serves as the technical lead for our statistical analyses. This role is responsible for conducting original quantitative and statistical analyses; providing technical oversight and support for contractors conducting statistical analyses; providing authoritative review of existing technical literature; and remaining current with new technical developments and innovations.

We are looking for a person with an advanced degree in statistics, economics, biostatistics or another field with a strong focus on statistical analysis and quantitative research methods. The ideal candidate will be familiar not only with the use of bivariate analysis, regression methods, survey sampling and weighting, and power and sample size calculations, but also with at least a few more advanced methods: these could include longitudinal analysis with random and fixed effects, multi-level modeling, structural equation modeling, survival analysis, decomposition, and various methods for coping with missing data. This ideal candidate will also be familiar with a few quasi-experimental methods, such as difference-in-differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity design, propensity score matching and weighting, and synthetic controls.

The Statistician position is an opportunity to use your technical skills for impactful, policy research that has the potential to provide an evidence base for changes to the justice and public safety systems in DC. Salary is expected to be approximately $110,000 - $141,000. Thank you for your help in publicizing our position. Please feel to reach out to me with any questions or follow-up.

Warm regards,

Niloufer Taber, PhD, MPA, MPH
