Dear Prof. Levy,

I hope you're doing well and enjoying the winter break!

I’m reaching out about the virtual Directed Reading Program that Yewande Olubummo (Spelman College), Ulrica Wilson (Morehouse College), and I are co-organizing at Spelman and Morehouse. We’ve had a really great run and are offering the program again next semester! We’re looking for a few more mentors to join our spring cohort. Could you please forward this email to the grad students and postdocs in your department who might be interested in applying?

I’ve included information below about mentoring for our program. More info can be found on our website at https://sites.google.com/view/drp-hbcu.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any of us!

Thank you!

All the best,
Yewande, Ulrica, and Biji

Mentoring for the Spelman-Morehouse DRP
The goal of the DRP is to introduce students at Spelman & Morehouse to slightly non-standard topics outside the curriculum and give them a taste of advanced math. Some of the students in the program are younger and just starting their math major.

As a mentor, your responsibilities will be to:
  • Submit a short description of a project that you would like to lead. The description should be written at the level of students.
  • Meet with your student for about 10 hours total (roughly 1 hour a week for 10 weeks) on a video platform like Zoom, and
  • Attend the following (virtual) activities:
    • a kick-off event and mentor training/orientation at the beginning of the semester
    • a check-in group meeting halfway through the semester, and
    • the Talks Symposium at the end of the semester (this is where the students give 15-min presentations on their projects).

The perks:
  • Gain experience leading projects and mentoring budding mathematicians
  • We will pay you $600! The program is funded by Spelman College, Morehouse College, the AMS, and the NSF.

More info about our program can be found on our website at: https://sites.google.com/view/drp-hbcu

To apply, please fill out the application form that’s on our website by Friday, January 20 at 11:59pm (eastern).

If you have any questions, please feel free to email any of us! You can also reach us atmath.d...@gmail.com.
