CONTACT: Assistant Professor Antoine Ledent, aledent[at]smu.edu.sg

I’m currently inviting applications for fully-funded PhD studentships at the School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS), Singapore Management University (SMU). Primary responsibilities include performing research in theoretical Machine Learning in collaboration with me (Antoine Ledent) and other faculty members.  SMU is young university with a very fast-growing reputation. It is currently ranked No. 41 globally (No. 16 in Asia) in the broad AI category and No. 85 globally (No. 15 in Asia) in the overall Computer Science subject according to recent 10 years of top-conference publications (CSRankings, September 2023).  The funding covers at least four years with the possibility to extend to 5 years by performing teaching duties. Strong candidates may be considered for the Presidential Scholarship, which comes with a highly attractive stipend.

Possible topics include Statistical Learning Theory, recommender systems or Deep Learning topics. There are available projects on the learning theory of deep neural network, the sample complexity of Matrix Completion, as well as applied projects on  interpretable or multi-modal recommendation systems. Further details about my research interest can be found on my webpage (https://sites.google.com/view/antoine-ledent/home).

The main requirement is a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related discipline from a reputable institution with decent grades. Candidates with a strong mathematical background (e.g., fresh graduates of a mathematics undergraduate programme) can expect to start working on publishable topics in learning theory soon after admittance. The ideal candidate would have a very strong command of basic probabilitylinear algebra and statistics, excellent general mathematical ability, some knowledge of machine learning, and willingness to learn coding (python and Pytorch/Tensorflow).

TO APPLY: Candidates should send their application by email to aledent[at]smu.edu.sg. Applications should include a Curriculum Vitaegrade transcripts and the name of a reference contact, but initial informal enquiries are also encouraged. Candidates are evaluated on a rolling basis with two deadlines a year: applications received by the school before the 31th of January 2024 deadline are eligible for consideration for August 2024 entry, whilst applications received before the 30th of June 2024 are eligible for consideration for January 2025 entry.
