Dear Students,
I'm forwarding you an email about an opportunity at APL/JHU. I sent you an email about another program earlier, but this one is somewhat different.
Best,
Leonid Koralov

Greetings,

Previously I sent an email requesting your thoughts on whether or not your department would be interested in nominating students to participate as a Summer 2023 National Security Analysis Department (NSAD) Scholars Intern.

I am happy to announce that we are now accepting applications for PhD students who are interested in working as a Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) intern supporting their current doctoral research, but with an interest in contributing to the type of work that NSAD pursues. The selected student will work at APL for approximately 3 months alongside an APL mentor and be paid a competitive stipend while continuing to make progress towards their PhD.

Please feel free to disseminate the attached call for applications to those in your department who you think might be interested. We are accepting applications until November 13, 2022 at 11:59 PM ET.

Regards,

Stephanie Tolbert

Subject: Introduction to JHU/APL Scholars Program, Gauging Potential Interest

Greetings,

I hope this email finds you well.

The National Security Analysis Department (NSAD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) is in the process of developing a Scholars Program for PhD students.

The NSAD Scholars Program aims to provide a summer funding source for advanced PhD candidates to continue their dissertation research while gaining access to the experiences, mentorship, and resources that JHU/APL has to offer. JHU/APL primarily works with the Department of Defense (DoD) in our role as a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) and trusted agent to the government. As such, our aim is to use innovative science, technology, and analysis to enhance national security, space, and national health.

We are interested in sponsoring students conducting research in Statistics, Data Science, and related disciplines. Examples of the types of problems that NSAD addresses include using statistical methods and data analytics to perform decision analysis, uncertainty analysis, predictive analysis, and cost sensitivity.

We plan to select one Scholar to participate in the inaugural session this upcoming Summer 2023 in a full-time capacity as a JHU/APL intern supporting their current doctoral research, but with an interest in contributing to the type of work that our department pursues. We would appreciate your thoughts on whether or not your department would be interested in nominating students to participate.

I have provided an overview of both JHU/APL and NSAD for you to get a better sense of the type of research we conduct (see attached). If interested, we can arrange a meeting to talk in more detail about the work we do and the program.

Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Stephanie Tolbert
