Hi Jessica,

Here are the details:

Ph.D. Research Assistantships in National Airspace Resiliance

Alex Estes (Assistant Professor, AMSC Affiliate, R. H. Smith School of Business and Institute for Systems Research) and Dave Lovell (Professor, AMSC Affiliate, Civil & Environmental Engineering and Institute for Systems Research) are seeking to hire two research assistants to participate in a NASA-funded initiative. The positions will be full graduate assistant positions with tuition remission, starting in Fall of 2024. The main objective of the research is to develop methods to reduce the vulnerability of the National Airspace System to disruptive events, such as infrastructure outages and extreme weather. This initiative is highly interdisciplinary, and students will have an opportunity to interact with a broad set of participants including faculty and students at other universities, airlines, aviation consultants, and the Federal Aviation Administration.  The project is expected to use a variety of methodologies, including statistics & data analysis, stochastic modeling, optimization, and mechanism design. Students need not be familiar with all these methodologies, as specific project tasks will be delegated according to student interest and ability, but should have interest and/or familiarity in some of these areas. The project will continue for three years. Students will have the option to continue participating in the project for this entire duration, depending on performance and interest. Summer research assistant positions will be available for students participating in the project.

Interested students should contact Alex Estes (aes...@umd.edu). Prospective students will be considered on a rolling basis.

Thank you,
Alex
