Planning to apply to PhD programs in STEM/social/behavioral sciences next fall 2023? You should also plan to apply for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). The NSF GRFP provides 3 years of full support for PhD studies, with an annual stipend of $37,000, in science, math, engineering, and social/behavioral science fields. You can visit the NSF informational website by clicking here.

Learning about the NSF grad fellowship over this winter break will enable you to plan ahead AND take steps to improve your competitiveness. The UMD National Scholarships Office has an in-depth ELMS resource site for UMD NSF GRFP applicants, with recorded presentations (described below) and supporting materials to help you prepare a competitive application.

**Click here to complete a brief questionnaire to gain access to our NSF GRFP ELMS resource site.**

Current UMD undergraduates at all levels, and UMD alumni who will be applying to grad school NEXT fall 2023, as well as current 1st year UMD grad students planning to apply NEXT fall 2023, are invited to join our ELMS resource site.

Recorded NSF Info Session #1 - Introduction: This session will introduce you to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship program: what it is, who it's for, application components, how it's judged, and how you can prepare to apply effectively - whether you're applying this fall or in a few years.

Recorded NSF Info Session #2 - Writing the Essays: This session will discuss the two required essays - an intellectual/personal statement, and a mini research proposal. We'll cover what information needs to be in the essays, as well as strategies for writing them in a timely and effective way.

Eligibility: You must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident to apply for the NSF graduate research fellowship. You must be applying for, or enrolled in your 1st or 2nd year of graduate studies in an NSF supported field in Fall 2023. Other eligibility criteria may apply, please click here to access full eligibility info for the NSF GRFP.
