Dear Colleagues:

The International Seminar for Young Researchers in Political Studies is organized by the Interdisciplinary Group for Political and Cultural Studies (GIEPC) in partnership with the Political Studies Group (GEP). It aims to be a space for dialogue and discovery for young researchers who wish to critically reflect on major political themes. Therefore, it is an excellent opportunity for young academics at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels (or those who have completed their doctoral studies in the last three years) who seek to present advanced and exploratory work to a receptive audience. By valuing the participation of younger generations, we want to stimulate a critical and creative academic community capable of contributing to the renewal of political thought and the deepening of public debate.

The Seminar, which will take place on February 27, 2026, focuses on the theme of Theories of Democracy. In a world marked by crises of democratic legitimacy, technological and ecological challenges, and new social movements, democratic debate is more necessary today than ever – especially among younger generations. For this reason, in this edition we will revisit a concept that, since Antiquity, has mobilized some of the most fruitful reflections in philosophy and political science.

From the Athenian tradition to modern readings of contractualism, from liberal theories to republican conceptions, from direct to representative democracy, from radical to deliberative democracy, multiple currents and schools of thought have disputed and continue to dispute the definition and destiny of democracy. In this sense, the topics to be addressed include, among others, the following:
  • Direct Democracy;
  • Democratic Revolution and the legacy of the French Revolution;
  • Communitarianism;
  • Radical Democracy and agonism;
  • Liberal and Representative Democracy;
  • Deliberative Democracy;
  • Identity Politics;
  • AI and Democracy / Technology applied to democracy;
  • Political and electoral sociology;
  • Social movements;
  • Presidentialism, Semi-presidentialism, and Parliamentarism

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the event, proposals for presentations from the scientific areas of History, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, International Relations, and Law will be accepted.

Abstract Submission:
Proposals should include an abstract (max. 300 words), along with keywords (max. 5 words). Please indicate your name, email, academic affiliation, and a brief biography (max. 200 words). Send your proposal to giepc...@gmail.com.
