Towards the beginning of the 20th Century, Russell drew a sharp distinction between two sorts of awareness. He distinguished between awareness of a propositional kind, which involves a relation to propositions, from acquaintance, which involves a relation to objects. Perceptual awareness was at first taken to be a prime example of this second form of awareness. But not long after introducing the idea of such a form of awareness, Russell was led to the view that only very particular, private objects can be the objects of such awareness.
The objective of the event is to explore the significance of the notion of acquaintance. Must the domain of objects to which we can stand in such a relation be restricted as Russell supposed? What led him to that supposition? If the domain need not be restricted, what role can the notion of acquaintance play in an understanding of perception and mental life more generally?
