The Hows and Whys of Attention: A Neurophilosophical Exploration Based on Active Inference
Abstract: Attention is a widely studied phenomenon in philosophy and cognitive sciences. However, the scientific literature on this topic presents several ambiguities and imprecisions regarding its definition and attributions, suggesting the existence of epistemological difficulties and even ontological divergences commonly assumed in its study. With this in mind, this research project aims to contribute to the potential mitigation of this scenario by serving as an example of exploring more rigorous yet relatively comprehensive ways to approach and operationalize attention. To achieve this goal, the project begins with a critical review of the current state of the field, followed by an investigation of whether the use of biogenic approaches could offer a means to alleviate internal disagreements and address its main challenges. Subsequently, building upon the results of this process and guided by neuro-philosophical principles, we explore how, and if, the increasingly popular neurocomputational framework of Active Inference could shed light on our understanding of the emergence, development, and configuration of attention. This exploration is aimed at enhancing our ability to explain, predict, and even inform improved manipulation of aspects commonly considered central to its study. Finally, we outline the primary theoretical and methodological limitations of this endeavor, with a view toward their potential resolution and, in particular, clarifying their status within the current landscape of pragmatic and highly embodied proposals in the philosophy of cognition.
