Join us on February 3, 2026, at 18h00 London time for a virtual roundtable dedicated to Thomas Wartenberg’s new book “Thoughtful Cinema: Illustrating Philosophy Through Film” (Oxford University Press, 2025).

We are delighted that Thomas Wartenberg will also be joining the session, offering an opportunity for direct conversation with the author. This event brings together Susana Viegas, Diana Neiva (University of Minho), and Tom McClelland (University of Cambridge) to explore the new directions that Wartenberg proposes for the field of film-philosophy.

The session will open with short reflections by Diana Neiva and Tom McClelland, followed by an open discussion and questions from the audience.

Wartenberg’s “Thoughtful Cinema: Illustrating Philosophy Through Film” raises timely questions about the philosophical capacities of film—how cinema can illustrate or even perform philosophy, what might be gained or lost when philosophy is carried out through images and sounds, and how the field of film-philosophy may develop in light of Wartenberg’s proposals.

To encourage active participation, an excerpt from the book’s Conclusion is available through the registration link.

Participants are also welcome to send questions ahead of time to susana...@fcsh.unl.pt, helping shape the conversation.

In order to attend the event and get an excerpt from the book, please register here.
