Doing Philosophy in the History of Philosophy

A discussão acerca da relação entre Filosofia e História da Filosofia é um tema recorrente de reflexão dentro da própria atividade filosófica. Por sua vez, esta discussão exige pensar outra questão, ela mesma filosófica, acerca do que é a Filosofia. A resposta acerca da eterna pergunta «o que é Filosofia?» depende quer do modo como, em cada época da história, ela foi respondida, quer do modo como atualmente pensamos a Filosofia, o seu lugar na sociedade e a relação que estabelece com as demais ciências e atividades humanas.

Fazendo zoom em questões centrais de que a filosofia tradicionalmente se ocupa – o que é conhecer? Qual a função da memória no conhecimento? Como se relacionam o Uno e o Múltiplo? Como viver humanamente na Cidade e no Mundo? Há lugar para o belo, a poesia, a música e o cinema, na Filosofia? – este workshop mostra como diferentes respostas dadas a questões de sempre se iluminam mutuamente quando pensadas a partir dos textos e dos contextos em que foram produzidas e quando debatidas a partir da diversidade de perspetivas teóricas daqueles que as estudam.

Este workshop articula as atividades do Mestrado em História da Filosofia e da Linha Temática Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy, Instituto de Filosofia. Nele apresentam-se trabalhos em curso ao nível da formação avançada em Filosofia e debatem-se posições filosóficas desde Platão a Wittgenstein, de Agostinho a Brentano ou Eisenstein.

The discussion about the relationship between philosophy and the history of philosophy is a constant topic of reflection. This discussion, in turn, leads to another crucial question, itself philosophical, about what philosophy is. The answer to the everlasting question "What is philosophy?" depends as much on how it has been answered in each period of history as on how we currently think about philosophy, its place in society, and its relationship to other sciences and human activities.

Approaching central questions that philosophy has traditionally addressed - What does it mean to know? What are the functions of memory and imagination in knowledge? Does the universe have an origin and an intrinsic unity? How do we, as human beings, live in the city and the world? Is there a place in philosophy for beauty, poetry, music, and the arts?
This workshop will show how different answers to the same questions are mutually illuminating when considered from the texts and contexts in which they were produced and when debated from the different theoretical perspectives of those who study them.

The workshop is part of the joint activities of the MA in History of Philosophy and the Thematic Line of Medieval and Modern Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy. Philosophical positions on the topics mentioned, from Plato to Wittgenstein and from Augustine to Brentano or Eisenstein, will be presented and discussed at the level of advanced training in philosophy.
