Overview

This special issue invites contributions that explore the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging neurotechnologies and their intersection with artificial intelligence. We particularly welcome papers addressing questions raised by closed-loop and affective Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs), neurorights, autonomy, cognitive sovereignty, and the governance of neurotechnological innovation.

The rapid development and predictable widespread adoption of neurotechnologies invites a critical examination of the challenges they already pose to users of brain implants. These challenges raise fundamental questions about the future of care, user-provider-medical practitioner power relations, and the regulation of human-machine interaction.

This special issue aims to advance the debate by integrating welfarist, relational, and critical perspectives on neurotechnology and neuroethics.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Conceptual foundations, applications, and limitations of neurorights frameworks;
  • Affective BCIs, informed consent, autonomy, and algorithmic coercion;
  • Identity, agency, and moral responsibility in the context of neurotechnological intervention;
  • Cognitive sovereignty, self-determination, and procedural safeguards;
  • Justice, equality, and fair access in neurotechnology deployment;
  • Vulnerability, power, and care in neurotechnology use;
  • Regulatory, safety, and governance frameworks for emerging neurotechnologies;
  • Cross-cultural and critical perspectives on neuroethics and neurotechnology;
  • Phenomenological or first-person approaches to living with neurotechnologies;
  • Posthumanism, enhancement, and human flourishing.
