Dear colleagues,

The University of Western Australia is looking to fill a fully funded PhD position as part of an exciting research project that will investigate the hydrodynamic processes that govern wave energy attenuation by seaweed/kelp. The project aims to increase understanding of mechanics of how waves interact with the different physical properties of seaweed species under both natural and aquaculture settings, and to develop tools that can be used to predict the effectiveness of seaweed to attenuate waves and protect coastlines and infrastructure. The project will incorporate a combination of high-resolution numerical modelling and experimental (physical modelling) work.

Candidates should demonstrate a high level of academic achievement through Honours or Masters degree coursework marks and research experience in Coastal or Offshore Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, or related fields. Preferred qualifications include some proficiency in numerical hydrodynamic modelling, experimental data collection, and data analysis using Python / Matlab. This position is open to Australian and non-Australian citizens.

To apply, please send 1) a cover letter (describing your research interests and experience and how this aligns with the project), 2) a CV, 3) academic transcripts and 4) contact details of two professional/academic referees to Prof Ryan Lowe (ryan...@uwa.edu.au) and Dr Arnold van Rooijen (arnold.v...@uwa.edu.au).

Applications close 10 August 2024.
