University of North Carolina Wilmington's Center for Marine Science (CMS), an internationally recognized center for coastal and marine research spanning genomics and bioinformatics, oceanographic modeling, natural products chemistry, marine geology, aquaculture, and environmental science, seeks a Research Computing and Data Professional to support the computational needs of researchers, staff, and students. This position enables research use of CMS's high-performance computing (HPC) system through software installation, Slurm scheduler support, application porting and troubleshooting, and collaboration with UNCW ITS on cluster operations. This position is the user-facing side of HPC management whereas OIT handles hardware, networking, and security. Duties include consulting with researchers on workflows and performance, developing and delivering HPC and scientific programming training, curating documentation, mentoring student researchers and HPC interns, collaborating on select research projects' computational needs, and contributing to grant proposals for computational and data-intensive research.
Minimum qualifications: a Master's degree in a computational or natural sciences discipline and two years of relevant experience (or a bachelor's degree with three years, or an equivalent combination); experience with shared memory parallel programming; proficiency in Python or R in multi-user environments; proficiency in a high-level language such as Python, Fortran, or C++; experience with GitHub and compiling software from source; and proficiency with Linux shell environments and job scheduling systems such as Slurm or LSF.
Preferred qualifications: a PhD in a computational or natural sciences discipline, two or more years using shared HPC resources and training others, GPU programming experience, containerization experience (Docker/Apptainer), Linux administration experience, strong communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, and university stakeholders.
