Dear Coastal List Members,

Oceanum is pleased to announce the release of a major version upgrade, v4 of Wavespectra!

Wavespectra is an open-source Python library hosted on GitHub designed for working with ocean wave spectral data. The library is built on top of xarray and offers robust functionality including reading and writing various spectral data formats, calculating integrated wave parameters, plotting and partitioning wave spectra, among many other features.

This major release is the culmination of contributions from various developers, introducing useful new features, such as:
  • Spectral reconstruction from partitions: Utilises a variety of frequency and direction shape functions to construct 2d spectra from partitioned wave data.
  • New spectral partitioning methods: Includes an implementation to track wave partitions over time from a common wave system.
  • Improved Installation: The former Fortran watershed module has been replaced with a new version written in C, making installation easier across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
For detailed information and reproducible examples, please visit our comprehensive documentation.

We thank all the collaborators for their direct and indirect contributions to this upgrade:
  • Sebastien Delaux (Oceanum)
  • Tom Durrant (Oceanum)
  • David Johnson (Oceanum)
  • Rafael Guedes (Oceanum)
  • Paul Branson (CSIRO)
  • Ron Hoeke (CSIRO)
  • Christopher Bunney (Met Office)
  • Kevin Ewans (MetOcean Research)
  • Jason McConochie (Shell)
  • Matthew Iannucci (RPS Ocean Science)
  • Ruben de Bruin (Freelance - RDBR)
Best regards,
Oceanum and the Wavespectra Developers
