We have a fully-funded PhD scholarship opportunity with a focus on physical oceanography available through the University of Western Australia’s Oceans Graduate School (https://www.uwa.edu.au/schools/oceans) and the Minderoo Foundation (https://www.minderoo.org/flourishing-oceans/).
Climate Refugia for Conservation: Physical ocean environment
The project seeks to identify key habitats for protection (e.g., coral reefs) – including for the creation and or expansion of Marine Protected Areas along the Western Australian coastline. The PhD candidate will identify regions of likely thermal refugia for key habitat-forming species based on knowledge of physical ocean processes at coastal to fine-scales. The data used will include both coastal observations and ocean circulation modelling output.
This position includes an annual tax-free stipend of $AUD40,900.
Candidates should demonstrate a high level of academic achievement (as demonstrated through Honours or Masters degree coursework marks) and research experience in physical oceanography or a related field. Applicants with experience in scientific coding (Python, Matlab, R), ocean modelling, and ocean-based field work are desirable. The position is open to both Australian and non-Australian citizens.
To apply, please submit a cover letter describing your research interests and experience, a CV and the names and contact information for two professional references to:
