Coastal Zone Foundation to offer Coastal Ecology & Biology short course Oct. 10

The Coastal Zone Foundation (CZF) has announced it will be updating its Coastal Ecology & Biology course as the pre-conference short course offered prior to the 2023 ASBPA National Coastal Conference in Providence, RI. The course will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 10, beginning at 1 p.m., while the full conference will be held Wednesday-Friday. Oct. 11-13

The Coastal Ecology & Biology course is part of CZF’s Certified Coastal Practitioner™ certification, which requires successful completion of 10 of the 12 coast-focused courses offered by CZF. These introductory courses are designed to provide overviews of a variety of disciplines with which coastal professionals may interact. So they can better understand how those disciplines fit into a larger coastal management scheme as well as providing some basics on these disciplines to facilitate coordination with experts in those fields in one’s career or research.

The Coastal Ecology & Biology course will provide up-to-date science-based and skill-building opportunities to professionals whose work is affected by coastal resources. The spatial zone of interest is a relatively narrow portion of the continental shelf/coastal plain where land and sea meet. Basic concepts will encompass major biological constituents that make up the dynamic and diverse set of ecosystems and species including the open ocean, barrier islands, coastal marsh, estuarine resources and threatened and endangered species.

Instructors for the course will be:

Fournier

Thaïs Fournier, a Coastal Resilience Specialist for the University of Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Center. Fournier has extensive experience in coastal ecology and water quality through her research experiences in New Zealand, Mexico, California, Massachusetts and, most recently, Rhode Island. Thaïs gained a B.S. in Biology from the University of New Hampshire and a M.S. in Marine Science from the University of San Diego. Prior to her role with URI, Fournier led the Town of Nantucket’s Estuarine Research and Monitoring Program. Fournier has also worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evaluating biosolid impacts on human and environmental health.

West

Jennifer West has been the Coastal Training Program Coordinator with the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve since 2005. West designs and delivers programs on water quality, habitat protection, and climate change for officials and decision-makers. With expertise in program management, science communication, and stakeholder engagement, West aids various groups, from zoning committees to conservation planning. Previously, she worked in environmental education and held roles at Rhode Island Sea Grant, URI Coastal Resources Center, and Audubon Society. West holds an MS in Environmental Sciences from URI and a BS in Environmental Biology from SUNY Oneonta.

The Coastal Zone Foundation was formed in 1984 with the purpose of advancing scientific and related engineering and planning knowledge. Please visit coastalzonefoundation.org to learn more about the certification and the group’s activities.
