Dear Colleagues,
I am recruiting graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) with interests in coastal physical oceanography, sediment transport, and estuarine–coastal processes to join my research group, the CoastalTIDES Lab, in the Department of Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University. One to two competitively funded positions (stipend and tuition) are available through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and/or fellowships. Positions are open until filled, with anticipated start dates in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
About the CoastalTIDES Lab:Research in the CoastalTIDES Lab (Coastal Transport, Inundation, and Dynamics in Emerging Shorelines) focuses on the physical processes governing coastal and estuarine systems, including flooding, erosion, sediment transport, and responses to storms, tides, and sea-level rise. Projects are based in Winyah Bay, the Pee Dee River system, and the Grand Strand region, though students are encouraged to develop projects aligned with their interests. Research approaches may include numerical modeling, field or laboratory data analysis, and process-based theory. The lab emphasizes hydrodynamic–sediment interactions with natural and nature-based features (e.g., marshes, floodplains, submerged vegetation) and their role in sediment pathways and coastal hazards.
Preferred qualifications include:1. An undergraduate degree in Marine Science, Oceanography, Civil Engineering, Geology, Physics, or a related field (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 required by Coastal Carolina University).
2. Experience or interest in numerical modeling, field observations, data analysis, and/or coastal and estuarine processes.
3. Experience with scientific programming or data analysis (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is beneficial.
4. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research group.
How to Apply:Prospective students should apply to the M.S. or Ph.D. program at Coastal Carolina University and list Dr. Hemanth Vundavilli as their prospective advisor in their statement of purpose.
Prior to applying, interested students are encouraged to email me with the subject line “Prospective Graduate Student – CoastalTIDES Lab” and include a CV and a brief description of research interests. All applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
We welcome curious, creative, and motivated students ready to explore coastal processes and hazards in one of the most dynamic estuarine systems on the U.S. East Coast.
