Postdoctoral Researcher position in the National Centre for Integrated Coastal Research and the Coastal Risks and Engineering Lab at the University of Central Florida
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to advertise an exciting Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity within the National Center for Integrated Coastal Research (UCF Coastal) and the Coastal Risks and Engineering (CoRE) Lab at the University of Central Florida (UCF), located in Orlando, Florida.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Professors Ivan Haigh and Thomas Wahl in UCF Coastal and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering (CECE). This position offers the opportunity to work on high-impact, interdisciplinary research addressing extreme sea levels, coastal flooding, and their impacts on coastal communities.
This is a three-year position. The postdoctoral researcher will initially work on a project examining the impacts of sea-level change on storm surge barrier management, operation, and maintenance, incorporating recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The role will also involve contributing to the development of the next generation of the Global Extreme Sea Level Analysis (GESLA) tide gauge dataset (http://www.gesla.org), as well as supporting international intercomparison and coordination efforts in surge climate projections (SurgeMIP; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.wace.2024.100689). Beyond conducting innovative research, the postdoctoral researcher will play an active role in mentoring PhD students, contributing to proposal development, and engaging with a vibrant, collaborative research environment.
· PhD in Civil or Coastal Engineering, Geosciences, Statistics, Hydrology, Physical Oceanography, Geography, or a closely related field;
· Strong proficiency in at least one common scientific programming language (MATLAB, R, Python, or Julia); and
· Demonstrated track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
· Physics-informed machine learning in geosciences;
· Hydrodynamic numerical modeling of coastal and ocean processes (ideally using HPC resources);
· Multivariate and/or non-stationary extreme value analysis; and
· Coastal and/or compound flood impact analysis.
