Dear colleagues,

We invite submissions to the Special Issue “Ecosystem‑Based Coastal Defences for Multiple Benefits: Advancing Protection and Ecosystem Services.”

·       Submission deadline: 31 January 2026

·       Special Issue page: Ecosystem-based Coastal Defences

About the Special Issue

Coastal regions face accelerating risks from sea‑level rise, storms, erosion, and biodiversity loss. Traditional hard infrastructure can protect in the short term but often lacks adaptability and ecological co‑benefits. This issue focuses on ecosystem‑based and hybrid (green‑grey) solutions that harness natural processes while delivering biodiversity, carbon, and socio‑cultural value. We welcome work showing how engineering design, ecological processes, and community needs can be integrated to build resilient, multifunctional coastlines.

Key themes (include but not limited to):

1.     Ecosystem–Hydrodynamics–Morphodynamics Interactions

o   Process understanding and modelling to optimise protective function.

2.     Multiple Benefits & Co‑Design

o   Biodiversity, blue carbon, habitat restoration, and social/ecosystem services.

3.     Risk, Performance & Adaptation

o   Reliability under change, design criteria, monitoring, and digital twins.

4.     Sustainability, Governance & Policy

o   Frameworks, finance, and pathways for large‑scale adoption and maintenance.

Submission details

·       Article types: Original research, reviews, perspectives, case studies, data/software notes

·       Select on submission: VSI: CENG_Ecosystem‑based coastal defense” (journal keywording)
