About the Galveston District:

The USACE Galveston District has a long history of leading coastal engineering efforts starting with historic coastal surveys in the 1800s through the construction of the Galveston Seawall after the United States’ deadliest natural disaster ever that occurred as a result of the 1900 hurricane, and today as we continue to propel our Nation’s Energy Coast forward. The Galveston District is in the midst of another historic coastal engineering program that will rival the impact of the 1900 seawall, preparing the United States for the future. We are currently designing major coastal storm risk management projects in Freeport, Port Arthur, and Orange County, Texas while also working with our partners to deepen Texas deep draft navigation channels and evaluating resiliency of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. In parallel, the Galveston district is expending significant efforts in ecosystem restoration along the entire Texas coastline. We are also nearing completion of the Coastal Texas Feasibility Analysis one of the most ambitious coastal defense system ever undertaken in the United States. We are taking extreme innovation to deliver the largest Civil Works program in the nation in record time. To that end, the Galveston District is driving innovation across our programs including new approaches to coastal modeling, better frameworks for coastal decision making, application of advanced materials, smart coastal levee safety, and intelligent control systems that integrate advanced sensors with real time modeling to project decision space in a way never before available to coastal levee system operators. We are a growing team with responsibly for the entirely of the 370 miles of Texas gulf coastline including 28 ports.
