Dr. Amin Rafiei’s research group at the University of Hawaii at Manoa invites applications for a Ph.D. position in Marine Geotechnics and  Geotechnical Engineering. The prospective Ph.D. student will conduct research on topics centered around marine geotechnics and cyclic behavior of soils with applications in renewable energies and coastal resiliency. The specific areas of research include but are not limited to lateral capacity assessment of piles under cyclic loadings, analysis of sediment liquefaction and sediment transport, and submarine slope instability analysis. The position will provide full tuition coverage, stipend, and health insurance.

Minimum Qualifications

§  Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field. Students with Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related fields and strong research background in Geotechnical Engineering will also be considered for this position

§  Research experience in numerical modeling of geotechnical problems

§  Coding experience and strong analytical and quantitative skills

§  Excellent written and oral communication skills


Preferred Qualifications

§  Excellent programming skills in at least one of the following: Matlab, Python, or Fortran

§  Experience in modeling with COMSOL Multiphysics, PLAXIS, and ABAQUS

§  Research background in constitutive modeling of soils and foundation design of offshore structures

§  Research background in fluid flow modeling and simulation of wave-soil-structure systems
