At the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Wind Energy Technologies Office, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are jointly leading the
U.S. Offshore Wind Synthesis of Environmental Effects Research (SEER) project, a multi-year collaborative effort designed to facilitate knowledge transfer for offshore wind environmental research around the world.
As part of this effort, the SEER team is hosting a series
of free, public webinars to share the latest
research on the potential environmental effects of offshore wind energy
development, including minimization and monitoring strategies. Each webinar
will feature brief presentations from experts, a panel discussion, and an
audience Q&A period. The second of four
webinars, Recent Advances in Autonomous Environmental Monitoring Technologies to Support Offshore Wind Energy Development, will take place on
Thursday, 6 July 2023 from
12:00 - 1:00 PM EDT (4:00 - 5:00 PM UTC). Register here.
The goal of the webinar is to highlight recent advances in autonomous environmental monitoring technologies that support offshore wind energy development, with a particular focus on underwater platforms and sensors (e.g., gliders, passive acoustic buoys). Experts in this field of research will provide an overview of existing technologies and methodologies, and discuss their applicability to offshore wind energy development in U.S. waters and remaining challenges (e.g., data processing). The webinar will focus on the environmental data aimed to support responsible offshore wind energy development across U.S. regions and how autonomous technologies can help overcome environmental monitoring challenges in remote locations offshore.
Speakers:
- Brian Zelenke, U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS)
- Sofie Van Parijs, U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries
- John Ryan, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)
- Moderated by Jeffrey Clerc (NREL) and Hayley Farr (PNNL)
All webinar recordings will be made available on
Tethys and emailed to registrants.
