The University of Massachusetts Intercampus Marine Science Graduate Program invites applications for a PhD-level graduate research assistantship to study ocean turbulence and biogeochemical fluxes in ocean oxygen deficient zones starting Fall 2021.

This assistantship opportunity is part of a ONR supported study and is fully funded for three years.  Research will be conducted at the School for Marine Science & Technology at UMass Dartmouth and will examine the use of sustained autonomous observations for estimating the regional horizontal and vertical fluxes required by biogeochemical budgets.  Candidates with a background in oceanography, physics, engineering, applied mathematics, environmental sciences, or a related field are encouraged to apply.

Requirements
  • Strong quantitative analytical and data organization skills
  • Mathematical analysis & computer programming experience (e.g. Matlab, Fortran, Python)
  • Good command of oral and written English

To find out more and to be considered for this position please send a letter describing your interests and qualifications for the position, your CV/resume, and contact information for 3 academic/professional references to Prof. Mark Altabet (malt...@umassd.edu).  Please include your GPA and GRE scores (if available). Further information about policies and entrance requirements pertaining to program admission can be found at https://marine.massachusetts.edu/. SMAST is located in the beautiful coastal city of New Bedford, known for its fisheries, seafood industry and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

Postdoctoral Fellow – Autonomous Regional Ocean Turbulence

The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to study regional horizontal and vertical ocean mixing and its impact on biogeochemical fluxes in oxygen deficient zones, using data from autonomous profiling floats and synthetic drifters driven by regional ocean models.  Knowledge of ocean turbulence at small and regional scales, mixing parameterizations, as well as data analysis is required and knowledge of ocean biogeochemistry and experience with Lagrangian models is a plus.

The position is funded by an ONR collaborative study led by Drs. Mark Altabet, Amit Tandon, Geoff Cowles (UMassD), and Eric D’Asaro (UW), and offers broad interdisciplinary work involving analysis of observations produced by regional arrays of autonomous floats some of which are equipped with novel biogeochemical sensors. The fellow will also interact with graduate students and scientists at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and the College of Engineering at UMass Dartmouth.  Responsibilities include data quality control and archiving as well as participation in conference presentations and writing of articles for peer-reviewed publication. Other responsibilities may include oceanographic cruise participation, assistance in grant proposal writing, and graduate student supervision.

The minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in oceanography, engineering, environmental physics or a closely-related field.  The candidate should be highly motivated and have demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a research group. Organizational proficiency and strong oral and written communication skills are essential. This is a full-time position and is eligible for benefits.  The initial appointment at UMass Dartmouth will be for one year, with possibilities for extension to a second and third year.

Applicants should send a letter stating their interests and qualifications, along with a current curriculum vitae, a brief narrative describing their professional goals, and a list of three references, electronically, to: Professor Mark Altabet (malt...@umassd.edu), Dept. of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences, School for Marine Science and, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.  The anticipated start date is March 1, 2021. An official graduate transcript will be required for finalists.  For more information about this position please go to http://careers.umassd.edu/dartmouth/en-us/job/506650/postdoctoral-fellow
