Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Our Division of Ocean Predictions and Applications (OPA) is looking for new positions of Software Developers, responsible for (i) supporting modelling developments, implementation, and validation, (ii) porting/recoding/re-engineering/developing numerical procedures in the frame of ocean models, and (iii) deployment of applications and services with virtualization software such as Virtual Machines and Dockers.

The job location is CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Italy.

We are looking for motivated persons with the following requirements:
  • M.Sc. degree (or equivalent working experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or other scientific disciplines (i.e., physics, mathematics); fluency in English;
  • knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages (i.e., *nix shell);
  • good knowledge and skills in programming (i.e., Python and bash scripting);
  • knowledge of version control systems (i.e., git).
Furthermore, it is welcome that you have as much as possible of the following experience:
  • knowledge of workflow management platforms;
  • knowledge of Fortran;
  • HPC architectures and job schedulers (i.e., IBM Spectrum LSF);
  • experience in managing/manipulating NetCDF data.
Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefit could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).

We offer the opportunity to join our team through a temporary contract of 12 months starting from as soon as possible, with the possibility of contract extension based on performance, results achieved and new project opportunities.

Annual salary ranging is from 24 to 36K Euros, depending on qualification and experience.

Research position on Global Ocean Reanalysis | code 12440

Our Division of Ocean Modelling and Data Assimilation Division is looking for a new position of Post-Doc/Junior Scientist, that will perform research, development and assessment of the CMCC eddy-permitting global ocean reanalysis system (C-GLORS) that combines the general circulation model NEMO with the in-house ocean data assimilation system (OceanVar) https://www.cmcc.it/it/models/c-glors-the-cmcc-global-ocean-physical-reanalysis-system

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, or related disciplines;
  • Good Knowledge of compiled (i.e. Fortran) and interpreted (Python, R, MatLab) programming
  • Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages;
  • Fluency in English

The following experiences are highly desirable:

  • Experience with data assimilation techniques for geophysical fields
  • Hands-on experience with ocean numerical modeling, knowledge of NEMO modeling platform being an advantage;
  • Experience with reanalysis production systems, from input data quality control to evaluation of the quality;
  • Experience of parallel programming on supercomputers and knowledge of the NetCDF libraries;
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Our Division of Ocean Prediction and Application (OPA), located in Lecce, is looking for a new position of Post-Degree/Post-Doc Researcher, responsible for supporting the research and the coastal ocean modeling and monitoring activities.

This position is for a researcher with strong knowledge of remote sensing techniques and programming skills.

The activities will be focused on satellite observations of the estuaries and river plumes with a focus on monitoring temperature and salinity close to the river mouths. The duties will include processing and interpreting the satellite observational datasets, exploiting innovative methods and tools, and integrating them with in situ observations and modeling results at local scale.

The activities will also include collaboration on writing of peer-reviewed publications as well as communication of findings through reporting and/or participation in conferences.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master degree and/or PhD or equivalent experience in Ecosystem and Environment related sciences;
  • Knowledge of (geo)statistics and of geospatial/remote sensing data processing software and tools, including GIS and SNAP;
  • Experience on the elaboration of optical EO data and derived products for studying processes related to status and changes in coastal /estuarine transitional systems;
  • Skills on information technology-based tools and common programming languages (e.g. R, Python, IDL) to deal with huge amount of data;
  • A good knowledge of English language

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Good communication skills and teamworking attitude
  • Advanced knowledge of GIS and SNAP softwares
  • An excellent knowledge of English language
  • Experience in writing of peer-reviewed publications

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • The appointment period will be initially of 12 months starting from October 2023, renewable for 12 additional months pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher
  • The gross annual salary range is from 24 to 32 k€ for Post Degree and from 28 to 38 k€ for Post Doc, depending on qualification and working experience.
