Hello

I would like to share an exciting PhD opportunity to develop a machine learning model to simulate waves and surges at University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada). This work is a collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Please see more details below and reach to Dr. Adam Monahan (mona...@uvic.ca) if you are interested and/or would like to have more information. Also please feel free to share this opportunity to others who might be interested.

Thanks

Mercè

Graduate Student Opportunity in Machine Learning Modelling of Ocean Surface Waves and Storm Surges at University of Victoria, BC, Canada

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to study machine learning modelling of the coastal ocean surface wave and storm surge fields in historical and future climates.  This work is a partnership between University of Victoria and Environment and Climate Change Canada and is based at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria in beautiful Victoria, BC, Canada.

Planning and adaptation decisions in response to climate change require quantification of future change with associated uncertainties. Producing large ensembles of high-resolution information from dynamical models can be prohibitively expensive.  This project will use deep learning techniques to develop surrogate models of high-resolution coastal wave and storm surge fields based on output from physics-based models.  The surrogate models to be developed are computationally inexpensive and will be used to generate ensembles of historical variability and future projections.  This work will be conducted as a member of a larger team using deep learning methods to generate high-resolution weather and climate information.

Prospective students should be bright and self-motivated with good communication skills.  We are looking for a student with the ability to think logically, to work independently, and to perform detailed computational analyses. Experience with Python is required.  Experience with physical oceanography, machine learning, and tools such as PyTorch are all assets in this position. For further information, contact Dr. Adam Monahan at mona...@uvic.ca

Review of applications will start on July 15 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Most international students should take the GRE and may need to demonstrate English proficiency through tests like TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB.
