Dear Coastal List Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the release of the Intertidal module, now available on CASSIE, an open-access platform designed to support coastal analysis and monitoring using satellite imagery and geospatial methods.

The Intertidal module was developed to automatically extract intertidal topography from satellite imagery combined with user-provided tidal data, based on an adaptation of the Waterline Method.

It operates on user-defined satellite image collections over a selected time interval and region of interest, anywhere on the globe. Waterlines are automatically detected and associated with the closest tidal level based on acquisition time, where each line is treated as an elevation contour, enabling the generation of digital elevation models.

As outputs, the module provides:
  • The intertidal zone area, with the possibility of manual filtering to remove noise and misdetections, supporting temporal analysis of intertidal zone variability;
  • Direct kriging interpolation for topographic surface generation;
  • Full export of all intermediate and final outputs, allowing users to perform more controlled or customized interpolations and advanced analyses outside the platform.
The scientific basis for this module is detailed in the following peer-reviewed publication: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2025.106600.

We invite you to explore the Intertidal module and incorporate it into coastal and intertidal studies worldwide, contributing to the advancement of open and reproducible coastal science.
