Coastal Listers,

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) Coastal Engineering Branch has a paid internship opportunity located at the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise in summer 2025 for undergraduate or graduate (masters or PhD) students working in coastal sciences, particularly those with prior GIS experience.

The mission of the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise is to perform operation, research, and development in airborne lidar bathymetry and complementary technologies to support coastal mapping and charting requirements of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the US Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the US Geologic Survey (USGS). The JALBTCX is located in Kiln, MS on the Gulf Coast about 1 hour east of New Orleans.

The topic for this summer’s internship focuses on comparing various coastal resilience indices, including USACE’s Coastal Engineering Resilience Index.  Preferred skillsets include experience and/or familiarity with GIS, geomorphology, and remote sensing data products such as lidar. You will be mentored by Scott Spurgeon and Dr. Justin Shawler.

This paid internship will be a minimum of 8-weeks in duration between the period of May to September (start & end dates are flexible). To be considered, all students must be U.S. Citizens and must be presently enrolled at an academic institution or have an acceptance letter to start in Fall 2025.

Please send an updated CV, cover letter, and unofficial transcript to Justin.L...@usace.army.mil and Scott.L....@usace.army.mil by Dec 1, 2024 for consideration.
