PhD position in the Beach and Dune Systems (BEADS) Laboratory, Flinders University, South Australia

"Evolution, Geology and Geomorphology of the Younghusband Peninsula, SA.

We have a Ph.D scholarship for a candidate to work on an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project aiming to investigate the evolution, geology, stratigraphy, age structure, and geomorphology of the 180km long Younghusband Peninsula. This Holocene coastal barrier is dominated by transgressive dunefields and parabolic dunes. We aim to reconstruct the late Pleistocene-Holocene evolution of the barrier and also examine drivers of coastal change including the influence of neotectonics, changes in relative sea-level, climate, wave energy gradients and sediment supply, as well as examine the Holocene archaeology of the region. The candidate will join a multi-disciplinary, international team led by Professor Patrick Hesp (coastal & aeolian geomorphology) and including Dr Graziela Miot da Silva (marine geology; oceanography), Prof Colin Murray-Wallace (Quaternary geology), Dr Tora Tamura (Geology, dating), Prof Sergio Dillenburg (Quaternary geology), Prof Patrick Nunn ( Quaternary geology, coastal geography, oral history), Dr Ian Moffat (geophysics, archaeology), Prof Robert Bourman (coastal geology and geomorphology), Dr Christopher Wilson (archaeology), and Dr Roger Luebbers (coastal archaeology).

The successful PhD candidate will be responsible for conducting geological, geomorphological, sedimentological and chronological studies on the coastal barrier.

The candidate should preferably have an MSc degree in Geology, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, or a related field. Candidates with a BSc Honours degree will also be considered. Previous experience working with coastal systems, sediments and landforms, and GIS/Geospatial skills will be advantageous. We will also consider a cotutelle arrangement.

The Ph position is funded for 3.5 years and would preferably start by mid-year, 2022. Interested candidates should send a CV, motivation letter, and the names and email addresses of two referees via e-mail to Prof. Patrick Hesp at Patric...@flinders.edu.au. The deadline for applications is April 25th, 2022.

For further information about the project, please contact Prof. Patrick Hesp. General information about PhD studies at Flinders University is available at https://www.flinders.edu.au/study/courses/doctor-philosophy-phd-environmental-sciences.
