Funded PhD Positions in Coastal and Hydrologic Engineering

The Department of Ocean Engineering (OCE) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for PhD positions in Coastal and Hydrologic Engineering, focused on hydrodynamic, hydrologic, and hydraulic modeling for inland and coastal flood risk assessment. We seek applicants with backgrounds in ocean engineering, civil engineering, or water-related science fields. Familiarity with rainfall–runoff modeling, GIS, computer programming (MATLAB/Python), and coastal hydrodynamics is preferred (e.g., HEC-RAS, ADCIRC, or similar). Students will join a diverse team of ocean engineers, oceanographers, civil engineers, and social scientists to conduct interdisciplinary research within the Ocean and Hydrological Modeling Lab, under the supervision of Dr. Reza Hashemi. Applicants currently in the United States are preferred; however, qualified international candidates eligible for student visas are also highly encouraged to apply.

These positions are fully funded, and the PhD student will receive full tuition coverage along with academic-year and summer stipends, as listed on URI’s website. The ideal start semester is Spring 2026, although we can defer to Summer or, at the latest, Fall if absolutely necessary.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Reza Hashemi (reza_h...@uri.edu) with the subject line PhD Application in Coastal and Hydrologic Engineering.” Please include a brief overview in the email including any experience or background related to these topics, and attach a PDF version of your CV Application fee waivers may be available for some international applicants. We will invited shortlisted candidates to an online interview.

The University of Rhode Island is a comprehensive doctoral research university and a Land, Sea, and Urban Grant institution, recognized as an R1 university for its high level of research activity. Located in a beautiful coastal town, URI offers abundant access to nature and ocean while being conveniently situated between Boston and New York City, providing students both a serene environment and proximity to major urban centers .The  Department of Ocean Engineering, the first of its kind in the United States, internationally recognized program, offers a multidisciplinary program including coastal resilience, hydrodynamics, naval architecture, ocean robotics and instrumentation, and underwater acoustics. The College of Engineering features state-of-the-art facilities, including the $150M Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering (opened in 2019) and the new Ocean Engineering Complex at the Narragansett Bay Campus, recently funded through a state bond initiative.
