Postdoctoral Associate - Extreme Events Institute
The Extreme Events Institute (EEI) at Florida International University (FIU) is at the forefront of extreme event and other laboratory, field, and modeling efforts in the coastal region. EEI research is funded by
funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Environmental Security and Technology Certification Program (ESTCP, and many other federal, state, and local entities. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research initiatives, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts, and interact with academic and industry collaborators. This is an 18-month post-doctoral position with the possibility of renewal.
Primary duties
 
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on coastal engineering and science, focusing on experimental and/or computational aspects.
  • Design, set up, and execute field data collection at Pompano Beach and Jupiter Inlet, FL.
  • Develop and apply hydrodynamic models to simulate waves and currents at the field site.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental and numerical data, and disseminate findings through technical reports, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate students as needed.
  • Collaborate with researchers from other institutions and industry partners as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
               
  • A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Coastal Oceanography, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in fluid mechanics and coastal processes.
  • Experience with experimental techniques including current meters, pressure sensors, and GPS surveying.
  • Proficiency in computational methods include large-scale and high resolution hydrodynamic models.
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis using software such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven track record of publishing research findings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
