Dear Coastal List Members,

We are pleased to announce an open PhD position in Experimental & Numerical Fluid Mechanics at Université Le Havre Normandie (LOMC, CNRS UMR 6294), funded by the Normandy Region.
Start Date: 01 October 2026
Application Deadline: 18 May 2026

Project Description
Local scour around piles is a critical issue in coastal and offshore engineering, directly affecting the stability and lifespan of marine structures such as offshore wind turbines, bridges, and port infrastructures. While scour under steady currents and regular waves is relatively well understood, real marine environments involve irregular waves and directional currents, leading to complex hydrodynamic processes near the seabed.

This PhD project aims to advance the understanding of scour processes under realistic wave-current conditions by combining physical modelling in a wave-current flume with high-fidelity numerical simulations using open-source tools such as OpenFOAM or REEF3D.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental studies in a wave-current flume using advanced instrumentation (ADCP, PIV/PTV, optical/acoustic sensors)

  • Perform CFD simulations of wave-structure-sediment interactions

  • Analyze hydrodynamics, turbulence structures, and sediment transport processes

  • Process and analyze large datasets (Python/MATLAB)

  • Supervise student projects and contribute to publications and conferences

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree in Fluid Mechanics, Coastal/Offshore Engineering, Hydraulics, Applied Mathematics, or related fields

  • Strong background in hydrodynamics and sediment transport

  • Experience in CFD; experimental experience is a plus

  • Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar)

  • Strong motivation for research and PhD studies

  • Good command of English (French is an advantage)

We Offer

  • Full-time funded PhD position (3 years)

  • Access to state-of-the-art experimental and numerical facilities

  • Integration within an internationally recognized research environment (LOMC, CNRS)

  • Opportunity to contribute to high-impact research in offshore renewable energy

Application Procedure
Applicants should send the following documents:

  • CV (including internships)

  • Academic transcripts and rankings

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Cover letter

Applications should be submitted before 18 May 2026 to:
